DESIGNER'S NOTES
An energetic Fox & Chave silk chiffon scarf with a design after a carpet of arabesques and flowers likely created between 1869 and 1873 showing the influence of Indian art on Persian culture.
The primary technique used in Persian rug making is known as hand-knotting, specifically the asymmetrical or "Persian" knot (also called Senneh knot), which sets it apart from other rug-making traditions.
In this method, the weaver ties individual knots around the warp threads, one at a time, creating intricate patterns. The wefts are then passed through to secure each row of knots. This painstaking process allows for complex and detailed designs.
High-quality Persian rugs often have a higher knot density, measured in knots per square inch (KPSI), which contributes to their durability and clarity of pattern. The weaving is typically done on vertical looms, and natural dyes from plants and minerals are used to create the rug’s rich colours.
